THINK TO DO IN KINABALU
1)MOUNT KINABALU
Climbing this mountain is the main reason many travellers come to Sabah in the first place. It’s regarded as been a relatively ‘easy’ mountain to climb. However, don’t take the challenge lightly; you really do need to be prepared and have a reasonable level of fitness.
2)KINABALU PARK
UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kinabalu Park stretches over 75,370 hectares around magnificent Mount Kinabalu. Encompassing four vegetation zones, from tropical lowland forrest to sub-alpine meadows, the park is home to an impressive array of diverse flora and fauna, including many endemic species. Kinabalu Park offers first-class trekking, and a handful of more sedate activities.
3)KUNDASANG WAR MEMORIAL AND GARDEN
Four peaceful, manicured gardens constitute the memorial: an Australian, English and Bornean garden each with various native plantings; and a Contemplation Garden with a reflecting pool and black granite plaques inscribed in gold with the names of the soldiers that died. The serene and poignant atmosphere is fittingly reverent. The memorial also displays a collection of newspaper clippings and memorabilia and a brief documentary film on the history of the Sandakan Death March can be viewed.
4)SABAH TEH GARDEN
Pot of tea? If you’re fond of a cuppa, a tour of Sabah Tea Garden gives you the lowdown on how a humble camellia leaf is turned into a perky pick-me-up. Return to the attached cafe, where your eyes can savour the miles of green while you tastebuds savour its produce. Sabah Tea Garden run longer tours that include hikes around the estate and offer a variety of accommodation packages in a Rungus-style longhouse or cottages.
5) PORING HOT SPRING
Poring is known for its popular sulphuric hot spring baths and the surrounding area has developed into a favoured local tourist attraction with not only the pools, but a terrific canopy walk suspended high in the rainforest, butterfly, orchid and tropical gardens, walking trails and a spectacular waterfall.
